Evolution

Science and Religion
:
I spent several years going to a Christian school where they exclusively taught the "creationist" standpoint over evolution. Let me explain what they believe.
Fundamentalists argue that there has never been one shred shred of evidence that matter on any level chemically can or will, can or will organize itself all by itself, even when energized, let alone organizing itself by itself upward to viable life and continually higher life, and finally reaching human life. They argue that Louis Pasteur's theory of spontaneous biogenesis cannot occur, which holds that a cell cannot add information necessary in its DNA, or its genetic code, to take itself to a higher level.
In short, they believe that nothing can mutate upward; this goes against Darwin's theory of natural selection. They argue that change or mutations from the center of the species suggests a downward trend in the species due to the Law of Entropy. Mutants don't improve the species, they die out.
A lot of these ideas are based on misconceptions about evolution, or outright old science, circa 1890. There have been countless experiments which have shown that random structuring of molecules given varied and wild environments do exist. The most notable of these was the Miller-Urey experiment, showing that given conditions of the early earth, organic compounds, which were the building blocks of life, were able to form from simple structures. Once organic molecules are formed, they will naturally coalesce in larger and more complex systems.

Their defense against upscale biological development using the theories of Pasteur are based on ideas that have been refuted since and even during his lifetime. The fact that they have to use old, refuted theories suggests that they cannot justify their arguments. Finally, their idea of nothing mutating up showcases an utter lack of understanding in the concepts of evolution. There is no such thing as mutating up or down, merely mutation. Nature does not actively search for improvements in life, it is an entirely random process in which one mutation is more suited to an environment than another. It's an ad hoc process.
There is no force behind it, and sinister meaning behind evolution. In fact, it shouldn't conflict with any religious belief. Quite the opposite in fact. Many scientists think that evolution is the driving force that God uses to populate the planet.

It's not for me, but like all the major religions, I'll let you worship in peace and have your holy days, spend your tithe, eat your communion and generally worship as you see fit.
Just don't shove your faith down my throat.

To some it can reach religious proportions. But, religion (and prayer) does have its place in the game, especially in that fraction of a second when the ball seems to be just a tad larger than usual (to the batter).

I cry foul!
The Jedi do not murder or judge the way any real organized religion can. The Jedi wouldn't go to Africa and say that AIDS is bad but wearing condoms is worse.
The Jedi are not a religion. Just bad-ass practitioners of solid ethics. . .with laser swords.

RIA isn't a religion...but it can be an educational or entertaining club.
...and it can't tell you that you can't divorce, sexual expression before marriage is immoral, put a woman in a burka, or sentence you to a fictional hell. Points scored!
